What Does Passport-Free Travel Mean?
Some destinations go beyond being visa-free for certain nationalities and offer an additional privilege of traveling without a passport. Travelers from specific nationalities can enter these destinations using only their national identity, or in some cases, any other document that proves their nationality. The concept of passport free travel is closely linked to the principle of freedom of movement practiced by countries with agreements allowing the citizens of certain countries to travel, reside, and work without restrictions. For example, the Schengen Agreement eliminates common borders among its 27 European member countries, including Germany, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, Greece, Spain, Portugal, and Switzerland, among others. These agreements enable citizens of participating countries to enjoy seamless travel within the designated area.
Other examples of passport free travel destinations include the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council, where citizens can mostly travel between member countries using only their national identity cards, without requiring a passport. Similarly, the Caribbean Community countries of Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines allow their citizens to freely travel between them using their national identity cards, driver’s licenses, or social security cards as proof of nationality.
In South America, the Mercosur member states, including Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, along with associate countries such as Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, enable their nationals to travel within the region without the need for visas or passports. They can freely move between these countries using only their national identity cards.
Moreover, in Africa, numerous countries extend the privilege of visa-free and passport-free travel to citizens of other African nations. For example, some countries within the East African Community, namely Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda, enable their citizens to effortlessly journey between these countries using solely their national identity cards.
Visa-free countries & passport rank
There is a direct relationship between how many countries a passport can visit visa-free and where it sits in the global passport rankings. Indexes such as the Guide Passport Index score each passport by the number of visa-free destinations it unlocks — including visa-free entry, visa-on-arrival, and eTA arrangements.
The more visa-free destinations a passport opens, the higher its global rank. Visa policies and new visa-waiver agreements between countries can shift those rankings year over year, which is why Mirka tracks every CBI passport we work with and keeps clients informed when access changes.
